NARRATIVE

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.3 Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

Lessons From Masters - Improving Narrative Craft- Students learn how to create engaging narratives by stretching out small moments and writing in detail.

Assignments: Students learn to study published texts to learn writing techniques to try their own narratives.

Lab Reports and Science Books - Students use inspirational nonfiction texts to help design and write about experiments and other scientific information.

Assignments: Students write procedural texts, descriptions, and analyses about experiments, then use that to write science-based information books.

OPINION

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.

Writing About Reading - Students read closely and gather evidence from texts to craft persuasive arguments.

Assignments: Students write letters and essays about their opinions about characters, scenes, or while books using examples from texts.

LUCY CALKINS UNITS OF STUDY:

Poetry: Big Thoughts in Small Packages - Children explore and savor language. Students learn to use line breaks to express the meaning and rhythm they intend and use visualization and figures of speech to make their writing more clear and powerful.

Assignments: Children write poems using all of their senses, plus their hearts and minds and imaginations, to write about their lives in fresh ways.
